Golf
The Algarve is one of Europe’s most popular golfing playgrounds, and the quality of the courses available are superb. Tee times can be hard to get, though, so booking in advance is advisable, particularly for groups. A one or two ball can often be matched up with other golfers to make up a four ball.
The Balaia reception will do an excellent job in organising the golf itinerary for you, or you may have already set your own itinerary. Some thumbnail sketches of courses are below to help you evaluate options, if needed:
Vilamoura (10 minutes, 5 courses)
• Old Course – much vaunted classic mature woodland course, with some recognisable signature holes. Enjoyable challenge with history on it’s side.
• Laguna – if you like the challenge of water, this is for you, particularly the two holes over the road which will test your nerve and your judgement.
• Millennium – popular course opened in 2001, with the five holes from the third to the seventh making the front nine eminently more enjoyable than the back nine.
Vila Sol (25 minutes, 3 nines)
• Any combination of the three nines will provide a fair challenge to all golfers. Mature woodland course with much character and of good length, all at a sensible price tag. Pleasant verandah alongside the 18th to enjoy a post match beer.
Quinta do Lago (30 minutes, South and North courses)
• Venue for the European tour Portuguese open in 2003, which confirms its status as one of the most spectacular courses in the area – well contoured on the slopes amongst trees, and with good use of natural water and rock features. A stern challenge to many golfers and well worth a visit.
Vale do Lobo (30 minutes, Ocean and Royal Courses)
• Spectacular golf among the millionaires row of Algarve real estate. Some inspiring holes on both courses, with the 16th on the Ocean course one of the most photographed in golf.
Penina (30 minutes)
• Championship course designed by Henry Cotton, which has hosted many Charity events as well as the European tour in its time. A good test of golf for all standards, with numerous resort facilities for non-golfers.
Carvoeira (40 minutes, Pinta and Gramacho)
• Designed and built on land that was meant for golf courses, and in the opulent surroundings of the resort development, these courses have been beautifully incorporated into the landscape by Nick Price and his team.
Palmares (55 minutes)
• A wonderful golfing challenge, combining sloping terrain, tree lined fairways, and with 5 holes on the front nine alongside the sea. Breathtaking panorama from the clubhouse and verandah, complimented by friendly and informal service. The walk is a good healthy test, and a buggy may be advisable for those who may require one.
Prices:
Vary considerably depending on reputation, location and quality of course. Being prepared to travel further (heading west in particular) will benefit from better value for money. There are also some local initiatives, like the golf passport, that can yield very good savings if a few rounds are going to be played.
